WHY THE NUMBER ON THE SCALES DOESN’T TELL THE WHOLE STORY

fitness progress beyond the scales
why the scales don’t tell the whole story

For many women, the scales have become the ultimate measure of success.

Lose weight and you’ve been “good”.

Gain weight and you’ve somehow failed.

But here’s the truth.

The number on the scales doesn’t tell the whole story about your health, your fitness or your progress.

And if you’re a woman over 40, relying on that number alone can be particularly frustrating.

Because your body can be changing for the better even when the scales barely move.

THE SCALES ONLY TELL YOU ONE THING

Your body weight is made up of far more than body fat.

The number on the scales can be influenced by:

  • Muscle

  • Body fat

  • Water retention

  • Hormones

  • Your menstrual cycle or menopause

  • Food still being digested

  • Salt intake

  • Hydration

  • Sleep

  • Stress

  • Exercise

  • The time of day

So stepping on the scales and seeing the number go up doesn’t automatically mean you’ve gained body fat.

Likewise, seeing the number go down doesn’t automatically mean you’re healthier.

Your weight is simply one piece of information. It isn’t the full picture.

WHAT IF YOU’RE GETTING FITTER BUT THE SCALE STAYS THE SAME?

Imagine two versions of progress.

In the first, the number on the scales has dropped.

But you’re tired.

You’re constantly hungry.

You’ve stopped enjoying food.

You’ve lost strength.

And you’re already worrying about what will happen when you stop dieting.

In the second, the scales haven’t changed very much.

But you can now:

  • Walk further without getting breathless

  • Carry heavier shopping

  • Get up from the floor more easily

  • Hold a plank for longer

  • Feel stronger in class

  • Have more energy

  • Sleep better

  • Feel more confident in your body

Which one sounds like real progress?

At Willow Tree, we would choose the second every time.

Because getting healthier isn’t just about becoming lighter.

It’s about becoming more capable.

MUSCLE CAN CHANGE YOUR BODY WITHOUT CHANGING YOUR WEIGHT

As women get older, maintaining and building muscle becomes increasingly important.

When you exercise regularly and challenge your muscles, your body composition can change.

You may become stronger.

You may notice your clothes fit differently.

You may lose inches.

You may feel firmer.

But the number on the scales might not change as much as you expected.

And that can lead women to think:

“This isn’t working.”

When actually, their body may be changing in ways the scales simply cannot measure.

This is one of the reasons we encourage women to look at more than one measure of progress.

BETTER QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF

Instead of asking only:

“How much weight have I lost?”

Try asking:

How much stronger am I?

Can you lift something that previously felt difficult?

Are exercises becoming easier?

Can you complete more repetitions?

How is my fitness improving?

Are you less breathless?

Can you recover more quickly?

Do you have more stamina?

How do my clothes feel?

Sometimes your body changes shape before your weight changes significantly.

How is my energy?

Do you have more energy during the day?

Are you sleeping better?

Do you feel less sluggish?

How confident do you feel?

Are you more comfortable exercising?

Are you willing to try things you previously avoided?

Do you feel more confident in what your body can do?

How do you feel in everyday life?

Can you get up from the floor more easily?

Climb stairs without stopping?

Carry your shopping?

Keep up with your children or grandchildren?

These are all signs of progress.

MEASUREMENTS CAN TELL A DIFFERENT STORY

If you are working towards changing your body shape, measurements can sometimes provide information that the scales don’t.

Your waist, hips or other measurements may change even when your overall body weight stays relatively stable.

Progress photos can also help you notice changes that are difficult to see when you look at yourself every day.

But even these shouldn’t become an obsession.

They are simply tools.

Not a judgement.

Not a measure of your worth.

And certainly not the only way to decide whether what you’re doing is working.

CONFIDENCE IS A FORM OF PROGRESS TOO

This is something that often gets overlooked.

The woman who walks into her first fitness class feeling nervous and unsure of herself may, six months later, be doing exercises she never imagined she could do.

She might be stronger.

Fitter.

More mobile.

More confident.

She might have made new friends.

She might feel happier in her own body.

None of that can be measured by a set of scales.

But it matters.

In fact, it can matter far more than losing a few pounds.

YOUR HEALTH IS MORE THAN A NUMBER

We understand that some women do want to lose weight.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a weight-loss goal.

But we believe your success shouldn’t depend entirely on what happens when you stand on the scales.

Because when you focus only on becoming lighter, it’s easy to overlook everything else your body is achieving.

At Willow Tree, we want to help women focus on building a body that supports the life they want to live.

A body that is:

  • Strong

  • Fit

  • Mobile

  • Capable

  • Balanced

  • Energised

  • Resilient

Because the goal isn’t simply to weigh less.

The goal is to live more.

SO, SHOULD YOU THROW AWAY YOUR SCALES?

Not necessarily.

For some women, weighing themselves can be one useful way of tracking progress.

But the key word is one.

The scales should be one piece of information — not the judge, jury and executioner of whether you’ve had a “good” or “bad” week.

If the number hasn’t changed but you feel stronger, fitter and more confident…

You are still making progress.

If your clothes fit better…

You are still making progress.

If you have more energy…

You are still making progress.

If you can do something today that you couldn’t do a few months ago…

You are definitely making progress.

LOOK AT THE WHOLE PICTURE

Your body is more than a number.

Your health is more than your weight.

And your progress deserves to be measured by more than the number staring back at you from a bathroom scale.

So the next time you step on the scales, remember:

That number can tell you how much you weigh.

It cannot tell you how strong you are.

It cannot tell you how far you’ve come.

And it certainly cannot tell you what you’re capable of.

At Willow Tree Women’s Wellness, we’re not here to help women simply become smaller.

We’re here to help them become healthier, fitter, stronger and more capable — for the life they want to live.

Because when it comes to your health, the scales don’t tell the whole story.
